Freakshow Cabernet

Between it’s unusual name and bright, busy label, Freakshow is a wine that promises to be different from the moment you lay eyes on it.

Come from Michael David Winery, who have always been a favorite of ours, Freakshow is a wine we’ve been looking forward to trying for quite some time now.

Ghost Pines Cabernet

Ghost Pines Cab, in it’s slim, tall bottle is a decent offering for it’s $18 price point.

Medium bodied with a rich purple color, the 2012 vintage has a very strong bite for it’s ABV of 13.9%. Made with a blend of grapes from both Sonoma and Napa Counties, this cab has decent flavor.

It isn’t dry and it’s not really much of a cocktail wine – much better with food than by itself.

Ironside Cabernet

This Cab, currently the only offering from Ironside Cellars, does a great job of what it set out to do – delivering a good Cab to the under $20 market.

To put it more simply, a Cab like this is a steal at the $15 we paid for it.

The 2012 vintage offers a nice 13.9% ABV. It’s full bodied with a deep ruby red color, but has a very gentle finish – perhaps a little too gentle, depending on your taste.

Sterling Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet

Sterling Vineyards sources 14 diverse vineyards spanning 1200 acres in California’s Napa Valley to create their Napa Appellation Collection wines, including this Cabernet.

First thing to notice is the beautiful bottle – as more and more wineries adopt brighter, flashier colors, the simple silver on black label of this Cab stands out a bit from the crowd.

Rodney Strong Alexander Valley Estate Cabernet

Rodney Strong Vineyard’s Estate Series of wines is a vast improvement over their “Sonoma County” line – at least as far as Cabernet is concerned. At $27, it is a much better buy than it’s slightly less expensive counterpart.

Rodney Strong Sonoma County Cabernet

Rodney Strong’s Sonoma County Cabernet is, at $21 a bottle, a bit overpriced – despite being part of Rodney Strong’s entry level line.

As Cabs go, this one was pretty tame – might be good for someone that tends to like lighter flavored reds.

Clos du Bois’ Sonoma Reserve Cab is a deep, ruby red wine with a mild flavor. Although it is a Cab, it also has some Merlot and Malbec, with hints of Petite Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
